Several weeks ago I had a home owner reach out from a referral wanting to update the side yard of their home. They had seen a cedar post and beam arbor on a home improvement site, and they wanted to add something similar to their home. I did a site visit and talked to the home owner of how to incorporate their idea into a new Modern Arbor to the side of their home.

I have worked on a variety of projects over the past several years. I knew that the posts would need to be buried into the ground for stability, the idea photos had no visible fasteners or bracing, so any anchors or bolts would need to be on top or on the side of the beams. It required connections to the house wall which was brick, so I used longer anchoring to the wall framing behind the brick, and galvanized bolts for rust prevention and longevity.

This project I used cedar 6×6 beams which have a durable exterior application and are able to withstand Oklahomas ever changing weather. One thing that I am seeing more and more is the lack of quality material to build projects with, at the lumber yard for this project I sorted through about fifty different cedar beams at two stores to find ones without large splits or gashes from forklifts and shipping to the store.

I was very happy with how the project transformed the side yard for this home. Sometimes when starting a project, you don’t know exactly how it will turn out, but this one was great and exciting to finish for this family.
